Membership is Belonging

Our faith tradition is not a creed, it is a covenant.

We are united by our common purposes and intentions. Membership is an affirmation, a commitment, a way of saying:  this is my church, this is my community, and these are the people with whom I choose to walk.

People need a place to be rooted, to work out questions of value and meaning, to have a spiritual life.
Membership begins the process of a deeper, stronger, more meaningful, more affirming experience along our personal spiritual path.

Our Covenant

Love is the doctrine of this church,

The quest for truth is its sacrament,

And service is its prayer.

To dwell together in peace, To seek knowledge in freedom,

To serve humanity in fellowship

To the end that all souls shall grow into harmony with the Divine—

Thus do we covenant with one another.

Thinking About Becoming a Member?

At Shawnee Mission UU Church, over 90% of what we do is open to all; no membership required. Whether you attend services, join a group, or help with an event, your presence is welcome and valued.

That said, becoming a member is a meaningful next step. Membership allows you to vote on important congregational decisions, serve on the Board of Trustees, and shape the future of the church. It’s also a public way of saying, “This is my spiritual community and home.”

Your membership also allows you to

  • participate in the governance of the church by serving on the Board and committees

  • vote on issues affecting the congregation

  • have one free rental of space in our facility each year

Becoming an Official Member is Easy; Just 3 Simple Steps:

Make a Giving Pledge

We invite members to make a financial pledge of any amount—what matters most is the intention behind it.
You can make your pledge online here or by connecting with our Church Administrator, Chae Stephens, in person or at stephens@smuuchurch.org.

How do I join?

Just the Basics

On the second Sunday of each month join us for a 30 minute overview of the church called "Just the Basics.” This overview is lead by a church member—just show up to learn more and ask any questions you may have. If you are not able to attend our set times for “Just the Basics” please watch the videos below, or feel free to reach out to Forest Fisk or Jim Crist and they would be happy to schedule a one-on-one session.

Starting Point

When you are interested in becoming a member, you will need to participate in our Starting Point class.

Starting Point is a two-hour class offered periodically either after the church service from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. or Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Childcare is available. The class focuses on journeys: Our personal journeys, the journey of the UU denomination and our journey together. For further information, contact Jim Crist or Forest Fisk.

Attend a Starting Point Class

Starting point classes are usually offered once a month. Reach out to our Congregational Life Coordinator, Forest Fisk, for more details at lifeteam@smuuchurch.org
