Children & Youth Religious Education Curriculum

This year, our children will focus on Unitarian Universalist faith and identify and the Judeo Christian roots of our faith. They will learn what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist, to feel a part of our church community while exploring Christianity and Judaism. Children will study Jesus as a historical figure, a radical reformer and a man who lived his life for justice and compassion. They will also study the many stories in the Bible that inform both our own faith and also the culture at large.

Toddlers

The Flower Garden

Our toddlers begin their exploration of Unitarian Universalism by learning the values and beliefs that guide us. Using story, song, craft and games, our youngest UUs will explore their environment and their faith by experiencing life through senses, emotions and ideas. This class is led during both worship services by Susan Culey.

Preschool and Kindergarten

The Bee Hive

This class for pre-kinder and kindergarten children uses Chalice Children and We are Many, We are One both classic Unitarian Universalist curricula that celebrate the wondrous qualities of children and expands outward to the things and people around them.

Red Group - Grades 1 and 2

Our early elementary class will focus on the faith and practices of Unitarian Universalism to help children feel part of our faith community. The lessons will feature our people, rituals, and celebrations using the UUA curriculum Around the Church, Around the Year. We will also look at Christianity and Judaism through the lighthearted play-theme based Super Heroes Bible People.

Blue Group - Grades 3 and 4

We Believe is a classic set of UU lesson plans that focus on learning and living the seven Unitarian Universalist Principles that form the foundation of our faith. These lessons will serve as the door to further exploration of our faith. We will also focus on our Christian and Jewish heritage by exploring Jesus and His Kingdom of Equals.

Green Group - Grades 5 and 6

Our older elementary class will explore Jesus and His Kingdom of Equals. Students are introduced to an interpretation of the historical Jesus based on contemporary biblical research. Lessons feature Jesus as a man who saw through hypocrisy and elitism and brought a message of affirmation and egalitarianism to the oppressed and powerless. He described a kingdom of love, not in the future, but present in the hearts of people. Classes will also explore a variety of interpretations of god through God Images.

Gold Group - Grades 7 and 8

Our middle school youth will also explore Jesus as a radical reformer in more depth using Jesus and his Kingdom of Equals as a base text. The class will also explore creative empowerment through You the Creator.

High School Youth

Our High School Youth Group meets on Sunday afternoons. Youth Group provides a place where liberal, open minded youth enjoy fellowship and explore topics of faith. The curriculum, Truth and Meaning, promotes a free and responsible search for truth and meaning and poses questions about the major Western religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) asked by our youth in a manner that will help them find meaningful answers, relate these truths to our own UU and help youth apply this knowledge to their own beliefs.
