How We Developed Our Mission and Vision Statements

  • Our committee began as the "Long Range Planning Committee."
  • We changed our name to the "Strategic Planning Committee," based upon two factors:
    • The comments of Wayne Clark, UUA's director of building programs, who said, "Long-range planning implies that you start with what you have and build from there. Strategic planning is more of a clean-slate approach and is less confining."
    • The committee's belief that planning should be an on-going process, not a one-time creation of a five- or ten-year plan.
  • The Strategic Planning Committee started its work on March 13, 2005.
  • After organizing ourselves, we asked the congregation to give us their thoughts on SMUUCh's mission and vision during both worship services on May 8, 2005.
  • The committee organized the results and presented the responses to the congregation in several issues of The DrumBeat over the summer.
  • The committee also worked on several drafts of a Mission Statement, an early version of which appeared in The DrumBeat.
  • The committee members led five Visioning Workshops at which 58 members and friends shared their thoughts on the future of our church.
  • The committee worked to turn what it received into a series of Vision Statements
